In the interview conducted by Stachowiak and McClay (2024), Dr. John Albert discusses his use of educational technology at California Elementary School, exemplifying the advantages of intentional, equity-focused leadership. As the primary instructional leader at the iInspire Academy, he oversees a one-to-one iPad program for students in kindergarten through fifth grade, aiming to close socioeconomic and academic disparities. Dr. Albert’s career path into decision-making roles, as he described in the interview, illustrates a methodical approach: identifying students’ unique needs, developing a clear vision, and evaluating small pilot projects before scaling school-wide. This evidence-based approach established his credibility and recognition as a pioneer in instructional technology.

Standard 3.1.b, "Ensure Access to Meet Student Needs," closely aligns with Dr. Albert’s methods. As he highlighted in the interview, he ensures that children from underprivileged backgrounds have equitable access to devices, applications, and personalized learning platforms. This reflects research emphasizing the importance of digital access for learning and engagement, particularly for populations such as English language learners and students with diverse reading abilities (Stachowiak & McClay, 2024; Prensky, 2001; Subrahmanyam et al., 2001). Technology serves as a bridge to equity, enabling students to participate fully in meaningful learning experiences that might otherwise be unavailable.

Additionally, Dr. Albert embodies Standard 3.1.c, "Model Inclusive, Healthy Use," as he uses technology to address challenges, promote community, and amplify student voices. During the interview, he described having students record themselves, share their stories with real audiences, and creatively express ideas. This approach mirrors research on authentic learning, where inquiry, relevance, and real-world connections enhance engagement and self-directed learning (Rule, 2006). He emphasizes pedagogy first, using models such as SAMR and GLAD to ensure technology supports literacy and language development, rather than simply serving as a digital placeholder.

Professional development was central to his initiatives. In the interview, Dr. Albert detailed how voluntary pilot programs, coaching cycles, and peer mentorship strengthened teacher capacity and confidence. Teachers received hands-on support to integrate technology meaningfully, focusing on instructional outcomes rather than the tools themselves—a practice supported by research on effective technology integration (Fonseca et al., 2014; Gulek & Demirtas, 2005).

Despite notable successes, he also shared real-world challenges: initial teacher skepticism, high student expectations, and limited resources. By starting small, celebrating early wins, and scaling in alignment with results, these obstacles were managed effectively. Outcomes were impressive: increased teacher confidence, greater student engagement, and substantial gains in reading performance among struggling students.

From a research-informed perspective, Dr. Albert’s interview provides both inspiration and practical guidance. It underscores the importance of equity, purposeful technology integration, and sustained professional support for educators. While context-specific, his approach offers a replicable model for educational leaders aiming to enhance inclusion, engagement, and authentic learning through technology.

    I really enjoyed reading your post because it highlights how intentional Dr. Albert was in his approach to technology. One thing that stood out to me as well is that his journey into educational technology didn’t start with the goal of simply adding devices into classrooms. Instead, it started with recognizing the needs of his students and looking for ways technology could help support their learning. I think that mindset is really important because technology should always serve instruction, not the other way around.

    Your thoughts about equity and access is also very important. Providing students with devices, especially those from underserved backgrounds, can open doors to learning opportunities they might not otherwise have. However, like you mentioned, access alone is not enough. Teachers need support and training to use those tools effectively. Dr. Albert’s focus on professional development and coaching really helps ensure that technology is used in ways that improve instruction and student engagement.

    I also liked your idea of starting small with pilot programs. Change in schools can be difficult, but allowing teachers to try new strategies, see success, and build confidence makes the transition much smoother for everyone involved.
